Effective Home Mosquito Control: DIY Traps and Insect Repellent Strategies from an Entomologist

With rising temperatures and the rainy season approaching, mosquito infestations become a common problem in many households. While insect repellent sprays help, experts emphasize that maintaining a clean, water-free environment is key to long-term mosquito prevention.

✅ Are Insect Repellents Effective?

Picaridin-based insect repellents have gained popularity due to their mild scent and effective protection, especially against Aedes albopictus (tiny black mosquitoes common in Taiwan). According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, three main active ingredients are officially approved:

  • DEET

  • Picaridin

  • IR3535

Some DEET-based products are safe to spray on window screens and tents, offering an added layer of defense, though direct skin application should be done with caution.

✅ Expert Advice: Environmental Control is Crucial

According to Prof. Wu-Chun Tu from National Chung Hsing University’s Department of Entomology, mosquitoes thrive not only outdoors but also indoors — in dark corners, behind curtains, or basement areas. He emphasizes that:

  • Female mosquitoes seek stagnant water to lay eggs after feeding.

  • Water removal and sanitation are essential in preventing infestations.

  • Poorly maintained septic tanks or drainage areas are major breeding sites.

✅ DIY Mosquito Trap (Cheap & Effective)

Prof. Tu recommends a DIY mosquito trap made using a plastic bottle and black tape:

  • Leverages mosquitoes' phototaxis behavior to lure them inside.

  • Traps them in a sealed chamber, with success rates over 90%.

  • Best placement: 50 cm above ground.

Weekly cleaning is advised for optimal performance.
